Statement on Newly Annouced Tariffs from Home Fashion Products Association (HFPA) Board President Charles Gaenslen

April 2, 2025

“While the HFPA supports the administration’s broader efforts to protect America’s economic and security interests, additional tariffs on home textile products will not help achieve those goals and will impose unnecessary financial burdens on American families and businesses, exacerbating economic challenges in an already uncertain climate.

Home textiles—including bedding, towels, and other essential household products—are not strategic imports related to our nation’s security or long-term economic competitiveness, but fundamental goods that millions of families rely upon daily. Subjecting these items to even higher tariffs would drive up costs, making them less affordable for consumers and adding undue strain to household budgets. Given that home textiles are already subject to duties under Section 301, the recently announced cumulative 54% tariff on goods from China, 26% tariff on goods from India, 29% tariff on goods from Pakistan, and 46% tariff on goods from Vietnam among many other duties announced, will have a severe impact on pricing, further compounding the financial pressure on both retailers and consumers.

Moreover, in today’s global economy, the U.S. lacks the domestic production capacity to meet demand for home textile products. These tariffs will not bring back domestic manufacturing but will instead force businesses to absorb higher costs, pass them onto consumers, reduce workforce investments, and simply relocate production capacity to countries other than U.S. Additionally, for domestic producers, further tariffs will raise prices on input materials making it even more difficult to be globally competitive. At a time when affordability and economic stability are paramount concerns, such measures would be counterproductive.

It is our hope that the administration will quickly come to a resolution with our trading partners and pursue policies that support economic growth, consumer affordability, and a competitive marketplace. The HFPA stands ready to collaborate on solutions that protect American consumers while fostering a strong and sustainable home textile industry.”
